Questions & answers about TILT
UNCONDITIONAL LOVE AND TIME TRAVEL — WHAT DO YOU MEAN?
Here are some definitions we use at TILT.
Unconditional love = compassionate connection to and acceptance of what is in oneself and others, with no strings attached and no expectation of return.
Time travel = moving mental, informational and/or physical aspects of a person into the future or the past, so the person’s experience and the experience of those around the person is that the person:
visits a point in time that is not the commonly accepted present [mental or physical], and/or
influences the commonly accepted past [mental or informational], and/or
receives information about the commonly accepted future [informational].
WHY FOCUS ON TWO BIG IDEAS AT ONCE?
We see unconditional love and time travel as representing the two most major shifts humanity will experience in the next 50 years. Scientific evidence already points to the beginnings of a recognition that human behavior is influenced by many factors, including random factors that occur in the future. Understanding that we are not fully in control of our behavior could lead to a breakdown in human culture, or it could lead to an awareness of the necessity of unconditional love as a universal approach to human fragility and vulnerability. We are working towards the latter outcome. Meanwhile, part of this shift will be due to the recognition that the future impacts the present (see below) — and this recognition among other discoveries has already brought about the desire to better explore mental, informational, and physical time travel. Using these time travel tools beneficially is likely to require rigorous thinking about how to access and scale unconditional love at the global level. So we see them as intricately intertwined (also see below, How do unconditional love and time travel relate?).
DO THE FOLKS AT TILT KNOW THAT TIME TRAVEL DOESN’T REALLY EXIST?
Yes, we do. However, all three kinds of time travel (mental, informational, and physical) are being investigated at Tier 1 research institutions throughout the U.S. and the world (examples: Washington University, University of California Santa Barbara, ETH Zurich, University of British Columbia, Argonne National Lab, and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, The Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics). Interestingly, China has banned all mention of time travel. The research cited above includes mostly investigations into physical time travel (except for Tulving’s work at Washington University [mental time travel] and Baumgart’s work at UCSB [informational time travel]) and they are all in the early stages of development. In the near term, TILT’s focus is on mental time travel — such as prospection, foresight, future orientation, aspects of hope, precognition and future preparedness; the empirical work of our founding Executive Director Dr. Julia Mossbridge is largely focused on these mental time travel areas. But in the not-so-far term, we are focused on informational time travel, such as sending messages backwards in time to guide future preparedness for our past selves and others (see recent draft of related research paper). In the far term, we are focused on physical time travel, such as sending an object or living being to a spacetime location that is not usually considered accessible at present (such as into the far future, or into the past).
WHAT OTHER ORGANIZATIONS ARE INTERESTED IN FORESIGHT, FUTURE PREPAREDNESS OR MENTAL TIME TRAVEL?
Here are a few, in no particular order:
HOW DO UNCONDITIONAL LOVE AND TIME TRAVEL RELATE?
Unconditional love and time travel could bring transformative benefits to the world. However, either one may not be able to exist without the other. For instance, if we attempted to scientifically understand and scale unconditional love without time travel, full acceptance of what is true in the present moment may be impossible without the psychological freedom that would come from knowing that one could visit other times and potentially influence events in the past or receive information from the future. Further, if we attempted to scientifically understand and scale time travel without unconditional love, responsible use of time travel — especially if alterations of timelines were possible — would be difficult to enforce without the benefit of knowing the users were experiencing unconditional love.
Beyond these application-based synergies, it is our intuition that the mathematics and physical principles that will be discovered by examining the scientific underpinnings of unconditional love will provide necessary insights into the principles needed to understand and apply time travel, and vice versa. This intuition is based on the idea that the experience of linear time exists only within the experience of duality; while nonduality and nonlinear time seem to be more closely related to the experience of unconditional love. But admittedly, the details are not clear, and that is part of the reason TILT exists — to become much more clear on the theoretical and potentially practical relationship between unconditional love and time travel, if there indeed is one.
WHAT KINDS OF APPLICATIONS DOES TILT CREATE?
We are creating applications that can lead us toward our goal of scaling unconditional love and time travel responsibly and sustainably for the benefit of the world. These currently include smartphone and web-based applications that support training on mental time travel, future orientation, and the practice of experiencing unconditional love. We are also actively working towards architecture and hardware-based applications.
Although we are application-focused, we also perform research on the data obtained from our applications to allow us to test hypotheses about unconditional love and time travel. We will then use these results to lead us to our next set of applications, which we will use to leapfrog towards our twin goals of simultaneous scaling of time travel and unconditional love.
HOW DOES TILT OPERATE?
Though we are not primarily focused on social justice, internally we draw on a recognition of white supremacy culture outlined described by Kenneth Jones and Tema Okun in Dismantling Racism — specifically those related to un-learning white supremacy culture. These reminders we find helpful in building a healthy organization.
TILT is a nonprofit with 501c3 status in the US as a charitable organization. We have a lean board and several advisors who currently volunteer their time. Except where earmarked programs have been funded, we currently rely on volunteer labor. We are developing strategies to fund salaries for our staff and leadership as well as a grant-making program for scientists and engineers.
WHAT ARE THE CHANCES UNCONDITIONAL LOVE AND TIME TRAVEL CAN ACTUALLY BE SCALED?
At TILT, we believe the chances are 100%, because when a group of committed, intelligent, creative and compassionate people work towards a shift they want to see in the world, that shift is very likely to occur.
In terms of technical roadblocks, we see them disappearing rather soon, as the taboo against studying unconditional love and time travel is gradually broken. We suspect that funding in these edge-science areas, including field-formation funding from TILT for scientists and engineers in the field, will shift the culture toward applying the knowledge that is already beginning to be discovered.
For instance, unconditional love is not a traditional topic for mathematical or physical scientists to examine — even most psychologists think of it as too religiously oriented or “woo-woo” to merit serious scholarship. And yet unconditional love is perhaps the most powerful human experience that exists. We believe that with proper funding and direction, testable theories about the generation and maintenance of unconditional love can lead to scalable, transformative applications.
Time travel is a more appealing topic for most mathematicians and physicists — but many of them think of the possibility of time travel as a theoretical or philosophical, rather than practical, question.
Regardless, given recent empirical results demonstrating retrocausality in quantum mechanical systems, it is clear that the physical world is not temporally linear in the same way our experience of it often is. Further, solid evidence of precognition demonstrates that mental faculties have the capacity to receive information about future events.
At TILT we aim to support engineers and scientists who are focused on the idea of building actual unconditional love and time-travel applications to benefit the world.
